Training Course
Containing Presentation Slides, Participant's Handouts, Process Guide and Example Report

A waste assessment is a visual analysis of the types and quantities of waste found in the workplace. It will identify the main types of waste present; analyse the waste streams and systems in place; give an idea of quantities generated; and help pinpoint opportunities for improvement.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (NSW), in conjunction with Sustainable Learning Australasia Pty Ltd, has developed a one-day training course aimed at improving the waste management of all government offices.

The training course will assist participants in undertaking waste assessments to contribute to their agency meeting its obligations under the WRAPP, and importantly to develop a sustainable waste reduction program within their office.

Course Outcomes

The course will focus on an agency's office-based waste assessment requirements under the WRAPP. These activities will help inform an agency's WRAPP Plan and Progress Reports.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course focus on providing participants with an understanding of how to:
· Complete an office-based waste assessment;
· Develop effective waste assessment plans;
· Identify better ways to manage waste and reduce costs; and
· Plan to integrate waste reduction into work practices.

Target Audience

This course will benefit those who do not already have a background in conducting waste assessments or audits and would like to ensure that their office has effective waste and recycling systems.

Participants' feedback

Feedback on the useability an practicality of the course from participants has been very positive, including:
· From an experienced WRAPP Contact Officer (WCO) who stated "This course has reinspired my enthusiasm…to look for ways to improve the capture of recyclables and the diversion of materials [from] landfill"; and
· From an inexperienced WCO who said "[The course] simplified the process - previously thought it was all too hard."

Use of material

This material may be downloaded for the training of staff in the management and reduction of office waste subject to the course remaining unaltered and provided no commercial usage or sale of the material occurs.
